Open Enrollment 2020

Open Enrollment - an annual event that allows you to make changes to your health benefits without a qualifying life event, such as:

  • Add or drop eligible dependents from coverage

    • ​​NEW for 2020 - An opposite sex domestic partner, over the age of 18, can now be enrolled in your health plans during Open Enrollment. Couples must be registered with the state of California to be eligible. Postdocs will have until Jan 31, 2020, to provide dependent verification documentation of the partnership. Partners can begin registering with the state of California on Jan 1, 2020.

    • Dependent eligibility documentation required when adding dependents, including children of registered partners

  • ​Add a benefit previously waived

  • Waive a benefit you no longer want/need

    • ​​If you intend on waiving medical coverage, you must provide proof that you have coverage under another comprehensive plan

  • Attend the annual Postdoc Open Enrollment Fair

Medical Plan Changes

Formulary Change

Beginning January 1, 2020 we will be using Aetna's Standard Formulary. If you are currently taking a prescription that will be impacted by this change, Aetna is reaching out to you within 45 days of the change date. If you want to research the formulary, please use this link. You will need to change the plan year to 2020 and choose Aetna Standard Plans for Plan Name.

Stanford Health Care Alliance (SHCA)

  • Beginning Jan 1, 2020, the monthly premiums will increase for all levels. Postdoc Only coverage remains free to the postdoc.

  • Copay for a PCP, including acupuncture and out-patient behavioral health/substance abuse visits are reduced to $10/visit (previously $20/visit)

  • Copay for a Specialist is reduced to $20/visit (previously $40/visit)

  • Urgent care copay increasing to $55/visit (previously $50)

  • Emergency room copay increasing to $150 (previously $100)

  • Hospital stay, including childbirth/delivery facility copay increasing to $250 (previously $150). If your hospital stay is the result of an emergency room visit, the emergency room copay is waived and just the hospital copay charged

  • Advanced imaging services will remain free when services are performed at a free standing center. Services provided in a hospital setting will incur a $100 copay.

  • Out-patient surgery will have no copay when services are received at a free-standing Ambulatory Surgery Centers. Copay will increase to $250 when services are received in a hospital's ambulatory center.

  • Out of pocket maximum increasing to $3500/individual, $7000/family (previously $3000/$6000)

Aetna Choice POS

  • Tier 1 is being eliminated from Choice POS II. This plan is returning to an in-network, out-of-network plan

    • Aetna Choice POS II network: Eligible services and supplies will be covered at 80% after you meet your annual deductible when you use Aetna Choice POS II network providers.

    • Out-of-Network: Eligible services and supplies will be covered at 60% after you meet your annual deductible if you receive services not within the Aetna Choice POS II network

  • Copay for PCP, including acupuncture and out-patient behavioral health/substance abuse visits are increasing to $25/visit (previously $20/visit)

  • You may still self refer to a specialist, but the specialist copay is increasing to $50/visit (previously $40/visit)

  • Urgent care copay increasing to $55/visit (previously $50)

  • Emergency room copay increasing to $150 + 20% co-insurance after deductible (previously $100 + 20% coinsurance after deductible)

  • In network deductible increasing to $600/individual, $1800/family (previously $500/$1500)

  • ​Out-of-network deductible increasing to $1200/individual, $3600/family (previously $1000/$3000)

  • ​In-network out-of-pocket maximum increasing to $4000/individual, $8000/family (previously $3500/$7000)

  • ​Out-of-network out-of-pocket maximum increasing to $8000/individual, $16,000/family (previously $7500/$15,000)

Teledoc and Teledoc for Behavioral Health - Phone and Online Video Consultation for both SHCA and Aetna Choice POS II is being discontinued


Retirement Planning Update

  • The Tax-Deferred Account (TDA) remains available to all salary paid postdocs. 2020 contribution limit increases, but official IRS amount not released as of his publication

  • Beginning Jan 1, 2020 a Roth 403(b) Account is available for retirement investment. More info here


What's Not Changing

  • SHCA will continue to be the lowest cost medical plan

  • Dental and vision benefit and premiums remain the same for 2020.

  • The Postdoc Assistance Program (PAP) provided by GuidanceResources will continue to offer 6 free face-to-face short-term counseling sessions, legal, and financial consultations and services.

  • Short and long term disability continues for all postdocs

  • Life insurance benefit remains at $50,000

  • Free Basic Travel Insurance, and low-cost Extended Travel Insurance for J visa holders (meets DOS requirements for J1 and J2 visa holders)

  • The reimbursement program from childcare waitlist fees and fitness classes will continue for 2020. A reminder that once our budgeted funds are gone, the program will end for the year. It's a good idea to process your reimbursement requests as soon as you are able
